Working of wind power systems

Wind always blows on the surface of the earth. This makes wind an inexhaustible, clean and renewable energy source. The most common method of harnessing renewable wind energy is using wind turbines that can generate wind renewable power. The components of wind power systems are wind turbine, a tower, wires and connectors and inverters or batteries.

The main components of wind turbines are a rotor, a generator and a tail. The rotor has two or three blades that move after gaining renewable wind energy. The rotating blades then turn on a generator which converts the renewable wind energy to electrical energy that can be used for several purposes. The tail of wind power systems ensures that the turbines can capture maximum wind renewable energy and can generate the maximum amount of electricity possible. Generally, the wind turbines are installed at heights so that they can capture maximum wind renewable energy to generate massive amounts of electricity.

The different types of towers used in wind power systems are free standing and guyed towers. Guyed towers are the least expensive towers that are available. They have a simple framework tat consists of metal strips supported by guy cables and earth anchors. This makes them are easy to use, repair and maintain. Free standing towers or stand alone systems are the ones that use batteries to store excess wind power generated.

Wind power systems are connected to grid connected systems. In this case, the wind renewable power is used to generate electricity. The electricity so produced can be put to several uses in wind power homes and also at commercial sites.

Solar power thermal plants

Renewable solar energy is used in solar power thermal plants to heat a fluid and turn it into steam. The steam gets converted to mechanical energy that is used to run a turbine. These turbines are in turn connected to generators and power them to convert the mechanical energy into electrical energy. The three types of solar power thermal plants are parabolic troughs, solar dish and solar power tower.

In a parabolic trough collector there is a linear parabolic shaped reflector that focuses the renewable solar energy onto a linear receiver that is located at the focus of the parabola. A working fluid gets heated by solar renewable energy when it passes through a number of heat exchangers. The working fluid then changes to steam that runs a conventional turbine and a generator to produce electricity. These plants are designed to operate only on green renewable energy source, the solar energy.

The solar dish uses concentrating solar collectors to focus the renewable solar energy at the focal point of the dish on which the power generation equipment is mounted. The engine of the solar dish converts the heat energy of the sun into mechanical energy to heat a fluid which passes through a turbine to power an electric generator that converts the mechanical energy into electrical energy.

A solar power tower converts the renewable solar energy into electricity by focusing all the sunlight on a heat exchanger that is mounted on the tower.

The use of solar power as a renewable alternative source of power in thermal plants is becoming very popular for electricity generation.

Wind Power

The use of wind renewable power has generated a large number of jobs in the last few years. This is because wind power companies require lots of people who have complete knowledge of advanced wind power technology. As a green renewable energy source, wind renewable power does not emit any particles that can cause pollution in the environment as opposed to non renewable sources of energy that emit smoke in the atmosphere. It is known as a cost effective energy source that can be easily harnessed and maintained.

Economies of scale can be achieved if one chooses wind power for fulfilling requirements of electricity. The emergence of sophisticated and innovative technology has improved the yield of wind renewable power. Conventional sources of energy can vanish any time because their reserves are depleting as there is a lot of pressure on them to meet the rising energy demands. Wind power on the other hand is a renewable energy source which is available in abundance in nature.

The use of wind renewable power must be promoted as this power is clean and eco-friendly. The wind turbines that convert renewable wind energy to electricity require less installation cost and can also be maintained at a very low cost. Wind renewable power therefore can be used as a good alternative energy source because the prices of oil are rising. The demand for wind renewable power has been increasing day by day and the wind power companies are ready to explore this source to its full potential.

Alternative power

Alternative power refers to electric power generated from alternative sources of energy. Alternative power is the electricity derived from solar energy, wind energy, geothermal energy, tidal energy and biomass.

The benefits of using alternative power are many. Solar power, wind power and hydro power are environment friendly. They do not emit any harmful or toxic substances into the atmosphere that could be hazardous for the health. Alternative sources of energy that are used to generate alternative power are available freely in the nature. They are renewable which means that they can be used again and again.
Alternative power is also a cost effective source of energy available. Alternative power is readily available for use and can be used for many purposes.

Though there are several advantages of using alternative power, a few limitations are also associated with it. The main limitation of using alternative power is concerned with the financial aspects. The installation of power generating systems to produce alternative power is very expensive. Usually, a lot of costs are incurred on maintaining and operating power generation systems.

However, the benefits and the amount of alternative power generated by these systems overshadow the costs. That is why alternative power is considered to be cost effective.

Alternative power is the only source of energy that has the potential to meet the energy demands of the future. Therefore, the development of alternative power as a source of energy must be carefully planned. Also, strategies must be made so that alternative power can be reliably and efficiently used as a power mechanism.

Alternative power sources

Alternative power can be obtained from alternative sources of energy. It can be put to several uses and is at present one of the most important renewable sources of energy available.

Solar power is the power generated from the energy of the sun. Solar power can be in the form of heat or light. It is the most common form of alternative power that can be put to use in everyday life. It is renewable, eco friendly and readily available.

Wind power is the power generated from wind energy by using wind machines or wind turbines. The main use of wind power is for electricity generation. Wind power is a renewable source of energy that does not emit any harmful substances in the atmosphere. However, the use of wind turbines for the generation of wind power may cause noise pollution.

Power from biomass comes from decomposition of plants and animal wastes which is a source of renewable energy. This energy is called biomass. Biomass power plants can be used to convert this biomass into useful alternative power that can be put to several uses.

Geothermal power is the power generated from geothermal energy. Geothermal energy is obtained from inside the earth. This energy in the form of hot water or steam is used to drive turbines that generate geothermal power. This source of alternative power is renewable, clean and non- polluting.

Most countries are using alternative power because it is affordable, renewable and workable.
